Today we
are revisiting
the subject of
Jesus’ Last
Supper
.
We
looked
at one version
and it’s variations
on the painting by
Leonardo da’Vinci
in a previous
exhibit
:

There are
countless examples
of similar paintings; Jesus
and his disciples sitting
on the same side of
a rectangular table
.
Here’s one that
looks quite solemn
:

Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret
France
1896

In this one,
no one is paying
attention to Jesus,
and he looks like he
might be ready for
some alone time
:

Jacopo Bassano
Italy
1542

I included
this one for the
interesting
faces
:

Hans Holbein the Younger
Switzerland
1524

Although his dinner companions
have been with him for three years,
they look confused and agitated
in many of these paintings

Some see these
paintings as a puzzle,
and try to identify the
figures based on the
details we know
about them
from scripture

Can you
identify Judas
in this one
?

Jaume Huguet

(Judas is the only figure
without a golden halo)

Here’s a more
dramatic scene
.
You can see the
motion & emotions
as Judas rises to leave

One more
example of everyone
‘sitting on the same side
of a rectangular table’
before we move on
to more modern
variations
…
This one was painted
on aluminum, and during
its exhibit the figure of
Jesus was shot
.
There is a hole
on Jesus’ right side,
but the shooter was
not identified
:

Lorna May Wadsworth
England
2010

In this
painting the
table is round, and
Jesus is calmly looking
directly at us, but the
unbalanced drapery
and the tilted table-
top give the scene
a chaotic feeling

broaden

Here
are some
more recent
versions from
various countries

This beautiful
art nouveau design
appeared in a copy of
‘Ilustracion Artistica’
