In
1901
the artist
Eugene Burnand
was commissioned
to illustrate a book
of parables
.
Over the next few years he
produced 84 pictures, drawn
with Conte crayon, and adding
charcoal, India ink, goauche,
washes & colored pencil
.
I chose some of my favorites
to show here, but a link at
the end of this article
will take you to the
rest of them

Here are the illustrations
for twelve parables, shown in
the order they appeared
in the book
:
The kingdom of heaven
is like treasure hidden in a
field, which a man found and
covered up; then in his joy he
goes and sells all that he
has and buys that field.
Mark 13:44

Parable: The Hidden Treasure

Again, the kingdom of
heaven is like a merchant
in search of fine pearls, who,
on finding one pearl of great
value, went and sold all that
he had and bought it.
Matthew 13:45-46

Parable: The Pearl of Great Price

Again, the kingdom of
heaven is like a net which
was thrown into the sea and
gathered fish of every kind;
when it was full, men drew
it ashore and sat down
and sorted the good
into vessels but
threw away
the bad.
Matthew 13:47

Parable: The Net

For
this reason the
kingdom of heaven
may be compared to a
king who wished to
settle accounts
with his slaves.
Matthew 18:23

Parable: The Unmerciful Servant

And I tell you, Ask,
and it will be given you;

Parable: The Importunate Neighbor

Then
he said to them,
“Watch out! Be on your
guard against all kinds of
greed; life does not consist
in an abundance of
possessions.

Parable: The Rich Fool
And if it bears fruit next year,
well and good; but if not,
you can cut it down.
Luke 13:9

Parable: The Barren Fig Tree
-=< O >=-
And the master
said to the servant,
‘Go out to the highways
and hedges and compel
people to come in,
that my house
may
be filled.
Luke 14:24

Parable: The Great Banquet
-=< O >=-
He said,
“In a certain city
there was a judge who
neither feared God nor
respected man.
Luke 18:2

Parable: The Unjust Judge
-=< O >=-
For
everyone who
exalts himself will be
humbled, but the one
who humbles himself
will be exalted.
Luke 18:14

Parable: The Pharisee and the Tax Collector
-=< O >=-
The kingdom of heaven
may be compared to a king
who gave a wedding feast for
his son, and sent his servants to
call those who were invited
to the wedding feast,
but they would
not come.
Matthew 22:2-3

Parable: The Wedding Feast
-=< O >=-
For it will be like a man
going on a journey, who
called his servants and
entrusted to them
his property.
Matthew 25:14

Parable: The Talents
