Koenig’s Connections

The
paintings by

Peter Koenig

explore the interwoven
connections he has seen in
the bible, having read
it several times
.

He has painted
biblical images based on
many stories and topics, but
I’ve decided to narrow the
focus to some of his
New Testament
subjects

Rather than show these
in the order he painted them,
I sorted them into the order
they appear in the bible
.
I’ll add a relevant bible
verse for each one
.

As soon as
Jesus was baptized,
he went up out of the
water. At that moment
heaven was opened, and
he saw the Spirit of God
descending like a dove
and alighting on him
.
Matthew 3:16

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit,
left the Jordan and was led by
the Spirit into the wilderness,
where for forty days he was
tempted by the devil
.
He ate
nothing during
those days, and at
the end of them
he was hungry
.
Luke 4:1-2

Then he went up
and touched the bier
they were carrying him
on, and the bearers stood
still. He said, “Young man,
I say to you, get up!”

When the demons
came out of the man,
they went into the pigs,

down the steep
bank into

“Jerusalem, Jerusalem,
you who kill the prophets and
stone those sent to you, how
often I have longed to gather
your children together, as
a hen gathers her chicks
under her wings, and
you were not
willing
.
Luke 13:34

So he made a whip out of cords,
and drove all from the temple courts,
both sheep and cattle; he scattered
the coins of the money changers
and overturned their tables
.
John 2:15

There he was
transfigured before
them. His face shone like the
sun, and his clothes became as
white as the light. Just then
there appeared before
them Moses and
Elijah, talking
with Jesus
.

When Jesus entered Jerusalem,
the whole city was stirred and asked,
“Who is this?” The crowds answered,

As she
stood behind him
at his feet weeping,
she began to wet
his feet with
her tears
.
Then she
wiped them with her
hair, kissed them and
poured perfume
on them

Now
the betrayer had
arranged a signal with
them: “The one I kiss is
the man; arrest
him.”

at once to
Jesus, Judas said,
“Greetings, Rabbi!”
and kissed
him

They
stripped him and
put a scarlet robe on him,

they said
.

Let

into my barn

the true vine, and
my Father is the gardener.
He cuts off every branch in
me that bears no fruit, while
every branch that does bear
fruit he prunes so that it
will be even more
fruitful

He told
them, “The secret
of the kingdom of God has

in parables so that, “‘they may be
ever seeing but never perceiving,
and ever hearing but never
understanding; otherwise
they might turn and
be forgiven

I couldn’t decide
whether to show Peter’s
self-portrait or a photo
of him in the studio
